Quite simply the relationships between groups and individuals are at once chaotic and complex yet simple – but nonetheless dynamic. Any attempt to map these relationships is ever likely have a limited, and more to the point, transient value.

Nonetheless, as a background for other investigations such 'maps' provide use foundations for the project just so long as the relationship are not imagined as being complete or enduring.

INTRODUCTION

‘Place Audits’ for geographic locations, community events, architectural spaces and places like cultural institutions are useful in identifying the dimension and diversity of the Communities of Ownership & Interest (COI) associated with, and attached to, ‘places’. Moreover, the various ways they are, and can be, understood and valued changes once they are described.

Equally, such audits are an effective strategy in discovering and articulating the layerings of interests, the cultural meanings and the various significances attached to these places, organisation and institutions.

However, it needs to be understood that such audits are by necessity subjective, ideally multidimensional and typically determined within various and variable cultural contexts and best described from within the COI itself.

THE PLACESCAPING

In essence a ‘place audit’ is about discovering and enunciating ‘the site’s’ placedness. Places are defined by the human interactions that goes on within them and that in turn shapes them, gives them significance, bestows the site/place/event with a ’form’ that is determined by the cultural realties brought to by its COI.

A ‘place audit’ is as much about – arguably more about – the articulation of the human relationships, and the attendant cultural realities, that give a place its form, functionality and utility.
